I believe that the phrase 'Arbeit macht frei' means more that in a spiritual way, working will make you free, or that you experience freedom when working. This was another way of twisting reality, oppressing the prisoners and explaining it to be good for them. The nazis somehow made it into a favor to the prisoners, their old filthy subhuman life was replaced with freedom given by work. How disgusting.
But I could be wrong.
